Battle will heat up on the streets of Vila Real

03 July 2025

The European leg of the 2025 Kumho FIA TCR World Tour culminates this weekend at the renowned Vila Real’s street circuit, while the championship fight has intensified over the past few weeks amidst a summer heatwave.

Yann Ehrlacher currently holds the lead over Esteban Guerrieri. Both drivers have prior experience at Vila Real, as the circuit hosted TCR headlined races in 2018 and 2019. However, neither Ehrlacher nor Guerrieri have yet claimed a victory there. In contrast, championship rivals like Thed Björk, Mikel Azcona, and Norbert Michelisz have all tasted success at the challenging 4.8km track.

Ehrlacher will be aiming to extend his lead, while Guerrieri will be looking to reclaim his advantage before the summer break. Vila Real has historically been a strong circuit for Honda, which could play into Guerrieri's hands.

The BRC Hyundai team has built strong momentum recently. Néstor Girolami and Michelisz have secured wins for Hyundai in the last two events, steadily recovering ground in the standings after a tough start to their campaign in Mexico.

One driver to watch is Aurélien Comte who had also raced at Vila Real back in 2018; the SP Compétition driver is fighting fit and proved it by driving his CUPRA Leon VZ to victory in the latest race at Monza.

A number of guest drivers will bolster the regular field this weekend. Marco Butti makes his third consecutive appearance for GOAT Racing, while Dušan Borković returns to the grid for the first time since his victory at Macau last November, another demanding street race.

Viktor Andersson will make his sixth start in the series and his third this year in his MA:GP Lynk & Co, while three Portuguese drivers will complete the field.
