Esteban Guerrieri said the driveshaft failure that deprived him of a lap in the second part of qualifying at Misano cost him the chance at a better show with his GOAT Racing Honda Civic but is still happy to have been in the mix after the programme’s last-minute confirmation.
The 41-year-old Argentine would be involved in a scrap for fifth place in Race 1 with Thed Björk and Aurélien Comte; then he would finish seventh again in Race 2 after passing early race leader Jenson Brickley to finish as the best of the five Honda cars in the race.
He commented: “In the first race I had a very good start, I overtook about three cars and then Volt on the first lap, so in the end we could use the potential of the car. If I had been stuck further behind, I would have ended up burning the tyres and then would have no pace. So, with this race we know how much potential is there. I was controlling the race not to be too close but not to let them go, the tyres weren’t suffering so I was able to push to try and pass Björk and Comte. I got close, but in the end it didn’t happen. The problem we had in qualifying was a bit sour, as without that I think we could have been in the top five or six. We only knew one week ago we were coming here, and so for the team’s spirit it would have been nice to enjoy a good reversed grid or to at least start in the top ten, but it is what it is.”
