Ignacio Montenegro’s rough start to the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour season in Mexico, when his wheel hub collapsed on the opening lap of the first race, launching him into the wall, was turned around on day two, with the Argentine youngster charging through in both races to a seventh and fourth place finish in his GOAT Racing Honda Civic.
The 20-year-old did a fantastic job in what was a still battered car to pick up useful points for the team after a long night of repairs to his Civic Type R on Friday night.
“Friday I was out into the wall because we had an issue with the wheel, so I knew Saturday’s races would be complicated,” said Montenegro after the final race.
“I went from P14 to P7, and then in Race 3 from P9 to P4. I don’t know where we could have finished if we started further in front, but I’m very happy with the P4, and I’m happy with the team. They’re really pushing me to the limit.”
With teammate Esteban Guerrieri leading the championship standings after his pole position and two victories, the reigning TCR Spain champion explains his goal is to help his countryman’s bid for a first touring car title this year.
“I’m here to help the team, I know Esteban is a very fast guy, and I’m here to learn the maximum I can from the team, and to help the team win the championship. I know last year they were close to get it, and I know what I have to do this year to help them.”
