Norbert Michelisz finished the first day at Misano on top of the time sheets in his Hyundai Elantra N EV, just leading teammate Mikel Azcona in a close final session, but the Hungarian believes a near-perfect lap on fresh tyres might be misleading as to the true pace of the team this weekend.
Michelisz set his best lap before the half-way point on a set of new Kumho tyres, and his time kept him on top right until the end, only joined by his teammate Azcona in the final moments.
“It’s difficult to make many conclusions,” said Michelisz. “Practice 1 was a tricky session, as we needed to understand how far we could go with the track limits. The car feels fine, but I still don’t feel we have the fastest package to be honest. I had a very good run in FP2 and if I set this lap again in qualifying, I’d be very happy.
It’s still very good to start the season like this and I feel good. I think I was just lucky, may best lap was set early in the session with a new tyre run and was inch perfect in Turns 6 and 8. I wouldn’t have been surprised to hear if it was also deleted, but my lap time stayed.”
