Ten Years of TCR - About the concept

Ten Years of TCR - About the concept

04 April 2025

Marcello Lotti – formerly promoter of the European and World Touring Car Championships – conceived the TCR technical regulations in 2014.

The category was launched in 2015 by WSC, which is the owner of the TCR name, logo and technical regulations.

Starting with the TCR International Series, the category quickly proliferated across Touring Car racing globally.

The TCR concept is based on production models coming from the manufacturer's assembly line, with the following technical characteristics:

bodywork: 4/5-door saloon or hatchback bodywork

engine: 2-litre, turbocharged, with output limited to 350bhp

transmission: front-wheel drive with sequential gearbox

Marcello Lotti:

“I knew the idea was sound, because a new category was needed after the decline of Super 2000 that we had launched in 2001, and TCR seemed to be the right answer.

Therefore, we expected it would succeed, but frankly not so soon and not like an avalanche!”
