Yesterday’s pole-sitter, Yann Ehrlacher, will have a challenging second race ahead of him. The Geely Cyan Racing driver has received a 12-place grid penalty following an overnight engine change by his team after his retirement from yesterday’s race.
Ehrlacher was running in second position behind the Hyundai of Mikel Azcona when his car came to a stop at the exit of Turn 1 at the start of lap 16, just after half-distance.
The penalty for changing the engine is 12 places, but he receives a small respite; because Ehrlacher set the fastest lap in the race, he was also promoted one position. Consequently, instead of his scheduled tenth place on the reversed grid, he’ll start 21st, buried deep in the midfield.
